The Sayings of Lao Tze By Lionel Giles, M.A.

Download

This is Lionel Giles' translation of the Tao te Ching, from the Wisdom of the East series. Giles (1875-1958) was Keeper of the Department of Oriental Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum.

He also translated Sun Tzu's Art of War . This translation is long out of print, which is a shame, because it is a very clear English rendition of this very difficult and profund text.

The mention of this classic, or "Treatise of the Way and of Virtue" (as it may be translated for want of better English equivalents), brings us naturally to the vexed question as to whether the text which has come down to us can really be attributed to the hand of Lao Tz ŭ, or whether it is not rather a garbled and unauthorised compilation of his sayings, or even the mere forgery of a later age.

The Chinese themselves, it may be remarked, are almost unanimous in denying its authenticity. It has been urged that we must make allowance here for Confucian bias; but the internal evidence alone should suffice to dispel the notion, to which many eminent sinologues have clung, that the Tao Tê Ching in its present form can possibly represent the actual work of Lao Tz ŭ.

On the other hand, it is highly probable that much of it is substantially what he said or wrote, though carelessly collected and pieced together at random. Ss ŭ-ma Ch’ien, who published his history in 91 B.C., and was consequently removed from Lao Tz ŭ by a much longer period than we are from Shakespeare, tells us that the Sage wrote a book of five thousand and odd words; and, indeed, by that time the Tao Tê Ching may possibly have existed in something like its present shape.

You are convinced that something has to change, but where do you begin?

The Way Of The Golden Elixir : A Historical Overview of Taoist Alchemy By Fabrizio Pregadio

Direct Download

Chinese alchemy has a history of more than two thousand years, re- corded from the 2nd century BCE to the present day. Its two main branches, known as Waidan, or External Alchemy, and Neidan, or In- ternal Alchemy, share in part their doctrinal foundations but differ from one another in the respective practices.

Waidan (lit., “external elixir”), which arose earlier, is based on the compounding of elixirs through the manipulation of natural sub- stances and the heating of ingredients in a crucible. Its texts consist of recipes, along with descriptions of ingredients, ritual rules, and pas- sages concerned with the cosmological associations of minerals, met- als, instruments, and operations. Neidan (lit., “internal elixir”) borrows a significant part of its vocabulary and imagery from its earlier coun- terpart, but aims to produce the elixir within the alchemist’s person, using the primary components of the cosmos and the human being as ingredients. Neidan texts cover a wider spectrum of subjects compared to Waidan; at its ends are, on the one hand, spiritual teachings on the Dao (the Absolute, and the origin of the manifested world) and, on the other, descriptions of physiological practices.

The Master Mind : The Key to Mental Power, Development & Efficiency By Theron Q. Dumont

Direct Download OR Buy

Theron Q. Dumont was the pseudonym used by William Walker Atkinson, a highly prolific author and leader of the New Thought movement. Atkinson was one of the first authors to write about the law of attraction, or in other words that "like attracts like".

Decades before Esther and Jerry Hick's "Money and the Law of Attraction" or Rhonda Byrnes "The Secret", he taught taught readers how to use the power of thought to attract wealth, health, happiness and success.

In the timeless classic The Master Mind Atkinson teaches us that "Our world is very much what we choose to pay attention to." He gives us the tools we need to permanently rid ourselves of the slave mentality and become Master Minds in our own right. "Man has it in his power to make of himself what he will‚ to become his own mental creator, instead of allowing others to create his mentality for him.

Too long has man bowed to environment and outer circumstances : he is now learning to be his own environment, by means of creating the same from within. Have you decided whether you shall be the Master, or the mastered? There comes a time in the life of each one of us when this question must be answered‚ the course chosen. It may be that this time has come to you in the reading of these lines. Are you ready to answer it, and to make the decision? Remember the question. It is this: ‘Mastery or Servitude‚ Which?’" This book includes the full original text meticulously re-typeset and designed.

The Secret of the Golden Flower By Richard Wilhelm

Direct Download OR Buy

The Secret of the Golden Flower a Chinese Taoist book about meditation, was translated by Richard Wilhelm (also translator, in the 1920s, of the Chinese philosophical classic the I Ching). Wilhelm, a friend of Carl Jung, was German, and his translations from Chinese to German were later translated to English by Cary F. Baynes.

According to Wilhelm, Lü Dongbin was the main originator of the material presented in the book (a section below, Reception from Chinese Taoists, suggests that the material is from Quanzhen School founder Wang Chongyang, a student of Lü Dongbin). More recently (1991), the same work has been translated by Thomas Cleary, a scholar of Eastern studies.

There are significant differences between the Wilhelm and Cleary translations. Wilhelm was introduced to the work by his Chinese teacher, while Cleary arrived at his own translation and interpretation. Some translations are given with the word mystery for the word secret in the treatise's title.

Classic works of Chinese philosophy preserve a spectrum of pre-modern science, from a time when philosophy and science were less distinct than they appear to be now. The foundations of their teachings often appear incompatible with modern science, yet the teachings are of significant efficacy in providing a degree of awareness that might otherwise remain obscured by modern society’s attention to more stringent standards of rational thought (for a further discussion of possible benefits, see Meditation).

To use Chinese terms, these philosophical works include yin thought with yang thought, that is, they reflect intuitive as well as rational perception. Intuitive perception accumulates and improves with practice and time. Rational thought benefits from an enhanced acuity of intuitive perception.
